What is the Process?

  • Screening and Program Development: An initial screening will assess your child's literacy skills, identify areas of strength and weakness, and help us create a road map for moving forward. I provide state-of-the-art, data driven instruction that is designed to teach in ways your child learns.
I use Orton-Gillingham (O-G), explicit, multisensory, structured literacy programs and materials.  These programs are designed, recommended, and endorsed by universities, parent organizations, and widely-acknowledged experts in the field of literacy.
  • Assessment: I offer guidance to assist you in determining whether Formal Assessment and a written report are advisable.  I can refer you to a licensed Psychologist if you decide to seek a formal diagnosis and detailed written report.  I provide Informal Assessment to guide the tutoring process, and to serve as a baseline to measure growth.
  • Tutoring: Students sign up for two 50 minute lesson each week.  The school year session runs from mid-September through mid-June.  Summer session runs from July 8th through August 31st.  Once a schedule is established, those times will be held for your student each week.
  • Atmosphere: Lessons are conducted in a warm, friendly, positive and supportive environment.  Relationship building is key, fun is a necessity! I will explore, honor, and delight in your child's strengths as we work together to overcome hurdles and develop new capabilities.
  • Location:  Barton tutoring is one-to-one, online, using the Whizzimo platform Susan Barton has partnered with, and Zoom conferencing.  For students residing in the San Francisco North Bay Area, periodic gatherings will be offered throughout the year to celebrate our successes and meet other students facing similar challenges.

"Wait and see" is not an intervention, and it is not recommended by experts.
